We have an abundance of plastic waste on our planet and the amount keeps growing rapidly on a daily basis. As plastic doesn’t degrade biologically, it stays around for hundreds of years without having anywhere to go. It piles up in our oceans and landfills and endangers our environment, animals and, indirectly, our own health. Thanks to modern technology, we are able to turn some types of plastic into recycled polyester fabric.
What is recycled polyester?
Recycled polyester is yarn made out of recycled plastic. It’s a green and sustainable alternative to other types of fabric. When you see the term ‘polyester’ mentioned on a label, you might be likely to turn away from that specific piece of clothing. After all, it is known for being an energy-hungry, non-sustainable synthetic fibre that is uncomfortable to touch and doesn’t allow your skin to breathe and therefore causes you to sweat. Recycled polyester, however, is the complete opposite. It’s a green version of this textile, which is made out of PET. This is the material you find in clear plastic water bottles. When recycling these bottles, they are cleaned and sterilized, before being crushed into small pellets. These pellets are turned into yarn that’s used to create fabric for clothes or bags.
Recycled plastic is beneficial to the environment
The use of recycled polyester is very beneficial to our environment and to the reduction of plastic waste. It prevents the used plastic pieces from ending up in our oceans or landfills and offers a new life for these pieces of plastic. Once plastic finds its way to the ocean, marine animals ingest huge quantities of plastic. It messes op their internal organs, which largely endangers them. The tiny pieces of plastic also find their way onto our own plates, as we eat seafood.
Fortunately, we are very capable of recycling PET-type plastic. That’s why it’s important to collect empty bottles and separate trash. PET packaging is distinguishable from other types of plastic by the number 1 on the recycling label. Make sure these packagings are thrown into the right bin so they’ll end up being used as potential recycled polyester
Support our cause
Waste2Wear is committed to collecting plastic waste and offering these pieces a new purpose as recycled polyester. We melt the plastic waste and spin it into thread that’s used to create recycled polyester clothing and bags.
